Music

From percussion instruments and recorders in younger grades, to band and chorus opportunities beginning in 4th grade, music thrives at Davidson Day. We even offer violin and piano instruction to students beginning in Kindergarten. In addition to music classes that are offered as elective courses during the day, we have a thriving after-school music program that includes pep and jazz band, plus private and group music study options. Music is even woven into other core courses in our curriculum, from science to foreign language. Our goal is to constantly explore new ways to make music inspirational, relevant and fun –- and to make performance opportunities available for everyone.

Lower School Music

You’re never too young to start loving music. That’s why basic music instruction begins in Early Childhood classes and flourishes throughout our Lower School. Children are first exposed to the basics of rhythm and melody, then advance to simple Orff percussion instruments and the four families of orchestral instruments: strings, woodwinds, percussion and brass. Our Lower School children even compose their own songs, and sing songs in different languages. It’s a wonderful way to start reinforcing the global awareness that we emphasize at Davidson Day.

Middle School Music

Like a symphony that builds in energy and excitement, our music program steps up a level in Middle School. Beginning in 4th grade, every student chooses to join either chorus or band at Davidson Day. They also begin reading, writing and performing music at all levels, and they learn how music relates to their other classes and to the world around them. The children have sung songs about the 50 States –- and they’ve even learned a Pythagorean Theorem song that’s tied to their math lessons!

Upper School Music

Our music program reaches its crescendo in grades 9 through 12. Offered as an arts elective choice, the Upper School music program exposes students to higher levels of music study, and adds depth and complexity to their performances. Upper School students also develop leadership skills through music, because we call upon them to act as section leaders and role models for the younger grades in band and chorus.
